TERRI’S DEATH AND AUTOPSY

Terri was given last rites before the feeding tube was removed, and a drop of wine was placed on her tongue.

Schiavo was at Terri’s side when she died. Her parents had been denied access to her during the final hours; however, they were allowed in the room after Schiavo left, about one-half hour after Terri’s death.

The medical examiner for Pinellas and Pasco Counties performed an autopsy that indicated extensive brain damage, which supported the earlier diagnosis of persistent vegetative state. In addition, there was significant damage to Terri’s nervous system. The examiner ruled that the damage to her brain and nervous system could not have been repaired with any amount of treatment.

The Schindlers held a memorial for Terri and complained publicly that they had not been told where their daughter’s ashes were going to be buried. (They were notified after the service.)

Terri’s ashes were buried at the Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Clearwater, Florida, in June 2005.
